Berlin’s Evolving Business Landscape: A Snapshot of Growth and Transformation

Berlin’s economic landscape is undergoing significant transformations, marked by a thriving startup ecosystem, shifts in the retail sector, and sustained investment in key industries.

Startup Ecosystem Flourishes

Berlin has solidified its position as Germany’s leading startup hub, with approximately 500 new startups emerging annually. The city is home to around 5,000 startups, attracting talent from across the globe. Key sectors driving this growth include SaaS/AI, E-commerce, Gaming/Media, FinTech, HealthTech, Climate Tech, and Mobility, with a strong emphasis on green innovations and digital transformation. Notable success stories such as Parloa (AI), Wooga and GameDuell (Games), and Zalando (Fashion) underscore Berlin’s dynamic entrepreneurial spirit. In 2024, Berlin-based startups secured approximately €2.2 billion in venture capital, accounting for 31% of the national total and 33% of all deals, reaffirming the city’s status as a magnet for investment.

Retail Sector Faces Challenges

The retail landscape in Berlin is experiencing notable changes. For the first time since reunification, the city’s retail space has declined. After peaking at 4.42 million square meters around 2015, the total retail space decreased to 4.36 million square meters by 2021. This reduction reflects the growing impact of online shopping and changing consumer behaviors.

Continued Investment and Economic Resilience

Despite these challenges, Berlin’s economy demonstrates resilience. In the first half of 2025, companies supported by Berlin Partner announced plans to invest €668 million in the capital, maintaining the high investment levels of the previous year. The healthcare sector led with €218 million, followed by services with €165 million. Notably, 76% of these investments came from companies already based in Berlin, indicating strong confidence in the local market.

Berlin’s economic landscape is characterized by a dynamic startup scene, evolving retail sector, and sustained investment across key industries. These developments highlight the city’s adaptability and ongoing appeal as a hub for innovation and business growth.
